According to the Education Secretary - Alan Johnson – to understand British values in Citizenship classes, the pupils need to learn British history. He said that an independent report, issued by a review group headed by Sir Keith Ajegbo - a respected former Headteacher of Deptford Green School - has recommended that building community cohesion was essentially dependent on the understanding of our history. He added that he accepted the recommendations, and that the teenagers would learn British history in a new style.

The main elements Citizenship classes would be to encourage critical thinking about ethnicity, religion, and race; about children learning about Commonwealth, the Empire, the events that have shaped what the British are today; etc.

The review group believes that the British children can be taught the core vales of tolerance, freedom of speech, and justice. Sir Keith added that the schools need to address the issue of ‘how we live together,’ and ‘dealing with the difference.’
